Similarity of length scales in high-Reynolds-number wall-bounded flows

چکیده

The wall dependence of length scales used to describe large- and small-scale structures turbulence is examined using highly resolved experiments in zero-pressure-gradient turbulent boundary layers pipe flows spanning the range $2000< Re_\tau <37\ 700$ . Of particular interest influence external intermittency on scaling these scales. It found that when suitable parameters are selected accounted for, dissipative motions follow inner even into outer-scaled regions flow, certain large-scale descriptions outer inner-scaled flow. same for both internal layer flows, different can be related recognizable features longitudinal wavenumber spectrum.

Introduction: scaling and structure in high Reynolds number wall-bounded flows.

On bou *A According to Lighthill (1995), Prandtl’s (1904) boundary layer has had the same transforming effect on fluid dynamics as Einstein’s 1905 discoveries had on other parts of physics, which, by the way, were celebrated in 2005 as the World Year of Physics. That the boundary layer becomes turbulent was formally known to Blasius (1908), though, of course, the origin of turbulence in a pipe ...

High–Reynolds Number Wall Turbulence

We review wall-bounded turbulent flows, particularly high–Reynolds number, zero–pressure gradient boundary layers, and fully developed pipe and channel flows. It is apparent that the approach to an asymptotically high– Reynolds number state is slow, but at a sufficiently high Reynolds number the log law remains a fundamental part of the mean flow description. With regard to the coherent motions...

Skin Friction in Simple Wall - Bounded Shear Flows in Large Reynolds Number Limit

Expressions for variation of skin friction with Reynolds number in fully developed turbulent channel/pipe flows and in zero pressure gradient boundary layers are derived. The proposed in this paper asymptotic (Reδ = δ(x)U ν → ∞) theory is formulated as a convergent perturbation expansion in powers of small dimensionless parameters dδ dx → 0 and u∗ U → 0 applied directly to the Navier-Stokes equ...

High Reynolds number effects in wall turbulence

A review of recent discoveries from high Reynolds number studies of turbulent boundary layers is given. The emergent regime of very large-scale structures in the logarithmic region and their subsequent influence on the near-wall cycle challenges many of the previously held assumptions regarding scaling of turbulent boundary layers at high Reynolds numbers. Experimental results are presented to ...

Simulation of High Reynolds Number Vascular Flows

While much of the hemodynamics in a healthy human body has low Reynolds number, resulting in laminar flow, relatively high Reynolds number flow is observed at some specific locations, which can cause transition to turbulence. (The term “turbulence” refers to the motion of a fluid having local velocities and pressures that fluctuate randomly.) For example, the peak Reynolds number in the human a...
